Rachel Grant

I am a visual artist based in Ullapool, a coastal village in the Scottish Highlands. I trained in sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2003, I then trained as a teacher and moved to Ullapool to teach art and design in the local secondary school. I am now a full time artist specialising in painting and mixed media drawing. The landscape, elements and plants growing outside my door inform my practice.

I seek to capture the beauty and transformation of the natural world, as it is effected by the seasons and weather. My process begins with mixed media drawings created outside from direct observation. These drawings serve as the foundation for oil paintings, translating fleeting moments and shifting landscapes into a visual language that I hope holds both spontaneity and permanence. I am motivated by the tactile qualities of oil paint, in my pieces I explore the mediums viscosity, build textures, often scraping back and layering glazes of colour and marks.
